SANUSI: APC'S EMIR AND JONATHAN'S MORAL VICTORY

With the unfortunate death of Alhaji Ado Bayero in the past week, the Kano Emirate lost unarguably one of the finest traditional rulers it would ever produce. And in the same vein, the entire Nigerian state lost a patriot, a moderating influence in the Muslim North and a father figure. The passing of the emir further impoverishes our country in a season when strong voices like his in the North have largely remained mute in the condemnation of the Boko Haram group.
Although the late emir was said to have died after a prolonged battle with cancer, what many Nigerians would remember though is that the revered traditional ruler's death was announced a few days after the governor of Kano State, Alhaji Rabiu Kwakwanso reversed an appointment made by the sage and threatened him with deposition or balkanisation of the Kano Emirate. Whatever was the immediate cause of the demise, Dr. Ado Bayero, who sat on the throne of his forebears since 1963, has exited this earth into the pantheon of his forebears.
In accordance with tradition, it was expected that the kingmakers would name a quick replacement for the late Ado Bayero. Yet what was really unexpected was the manner in which the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, turned the selection of the new emir into a do-or-die contest. Reports have it that the entire leadership of the APC together with their governors emptied into the ancient city of Kano ostensibly to condole with the people of Kano when their real mission was to ensure the emergence of the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, as the new emir of Kano.
The same party that pontificates daily on the democratic ideals of freedom of choice and the evil of imposition could not even allow the good people of Kano enough ambience to choose their traditional ruler. Newspaper reports have detailed how the like of Tinubu, el-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, Bukola Saraki and his boy the governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed, and other APC stalwarts forced the hands of a willing accomplice, Kwakwanso, in endorsing Sanusi as the new Emir of Kano.
The reality today is that Kano Emirate has a new emir in Sanusi Lamido Sanusi who, apart from being legitimately qualified for the position, can point to extraneous support for his emergence. Never before in the history of northern emirates had outsiders significantly influenced the choice of an emir as in the case of the new emir of Kano. Of course, the widespread protests all around the city of Kano speak to the politically motivated interference in the primordial affairs of the Kano people. Many Kano youths are angry perhaps not essentially with the choice of Sanusi as their emir but are justifiably infuriated that their kingmakers and their governor were externally influenced in what is simply a traditional matter.
Yes, the APC have succeeded in foisting Sanusi on the people of Kano, but they have equally robbed the new emir of the much-needed legitimacy to rule his people. It is a pity that a man who did not hide his dream of becoming emir in Kano even when the incumbent was alive has had that dream realised now and the very people he wants to rule would not even allow him access to the palace. Reports coming out from Kano claim that the new emir is operating from the government house while the security agencies are having a hellish time trying to put out the disturbances. Is Sanusi's case like the man who stole the king's trumpet?
Through their interference with what is purely the internal affair of the people of Kano, APC has put a new emir in office, but not in power. Even more worrying is the security challenges the manner of selection of the new emir has thrown up in Kano and its environs. Already, there have been too many security issues in the northern axis which have stretched the capabilities of the armed forces. To open up another axis of unrest anywhere in the North is not in the interests of anybody.
It is most ironic that the President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, whom the choice of Sanusi as emir is targeted at, is the one now cleaning the mess in Kano. Yes, as the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, it is his primary responsibility to protect lives and property. It does not matter whether the lives are those of APC or PDP members. It is quite reassuring that the President has risen above petty sentiments and the divisive politics of APC by ensuring that things do not get out of hand in Kano and that the new emir is well protected until all frayed nerves are calmed. This is his moral victory over his little-minded opponents.
All said, it behoves Sanusi Lamido Sanusi to choose to be the people's emir or the continued mouthpiece of the opposition party as he was in his CBN days. As he would soon come to realise, his main headache in the days ahead will certainly not be President Jonathan, but the man who is all over him at the moment for his own selfish reasons. Governor Kwakwanso wants to emerge as APC's presidential candidate for the 2015 elections; so helping Sanusi to the emirship eliminates one of his potential challengers to the ticket. But in the day-to-day running of the emirate, Sanusi needs to be consulting the governor - and therein is the minefield!
It is rather difficult to understand what the APC is gloating about with the announcement of Sanusi as emir as if that has foreclosed Jonathan from winning the 2015 presidential election. The truth is that Jonathan did not win in Kano in 2011 and yet he is the President. Besides, what is this infantile fuss by people like el-rufai all about? Sanusi has just been announced as the Emir of Kano, not the President of Nigeria!

Dear Sir,
OPEN LETTER TO THE SENATE COMMITTE ON NIGER DELTA
RE: NIGER DELTA AMNESTY TRANIEES IN GREECE UNDER ATTACK
BY RACIST HOTEL MANAGEMENT
In line with our previously held opinion and views regarding the coordination and management of the above programme in Greece; we would like to still use the same means (Open Letter) to draw the attention of the Chairman, Senate Committee Niger Delta, Sen., James Ebiowou Manager to the mismanagement, inhuman treatments, possible 'Modern day Slavery', harrassment of compatriots as well as racism attacks/ remarks by the management of the Attica Beach Hotel that was contracted to provide accommodations and feeding services to both Trainees and coordinators.
However, most notable in such unacceptable remarks are by Mr. Panagiotis, the manager/ owner of the Hotel where the Trainees are stationed, while some individual in our Mission in Athens, Greece has suddenly developed cold feet over continuous demand for relocation by the Trainees, whereby compelling them against their will.
As it is today, after weeks of petitions and peaceful protests by both the Trainees and their resident coordinators regarding the racism attack on them by the Manager/owner of the Attica Beach Hotel at the Sea Resort of Mati, by addressing them as, laughing like 'BLACK MONKEY' which brought about the request to be relocated from the Hotel, both the academy and some individual at the Embassy has turn a deaf ear to their (Trainees) requests. Such individuals are walking behind closed doors to see that our compatriots remain in the same Hotel. This is unacceptable in such a time in our nation's history.
It can be recalled, on Sunday, October 20, 2013, on page 12 of the Guardian Newspaper, we used our open letter to draw the attention and at the same time requested for urgent action by the presidency and agencies in charge for intervention in order to help redirect the cause of the programme in Greece. Sooner afterward, both the JetStream Aviation Academy and the same individual at the Nigerian Embassy in Athens, Greece repeatedly denied our claims/warning about a substantial percentage (Four out of the sixteen ex-militants) of the Trainees at the academy that were yet to be enrolled into their programme courses.
Information now has it that, the four Trainees that were not enrolled in their programme courses (Aircraft Maintenance Engineers) are about to be transfered to another country in order to re-start the programme after Fifteen (15) months (March, 2013 to June, 2014) of not attending the programme here in Greece. This, we have considered as a Waste of time, Senseless administrative procedure and Financial recklessness on the first batch of Trainees in Greece.
Mr. Chairman, it worth you note that, monthly living upkeeps for each Trainee in order to live in today's Greek society cost about 2,500 Euro (#575,000.00 Naira) excluding Training fee, this will total the sum of 30,000 Euro (#6.9 Million Naira) annually per Trainee. Sir, we are of the view that there should be some form of accountability and responsibility for such financial recklessness by those involved if the Trainees' transfer is implemented.
The confiscation of these Four young men and others international passport by the programme coordinators never makes it easy for them to return voluntarily to Nigeria, this illegal confiscation of the passports was designed by those involved to silence the truth about treatments of Trainees, such we considered as 'Modern day Slavery' in our effort to protect as well as fight for the right of less privileged amongst us, to this end, the Nigerian Embassy was informed but never acted on our tips rather it was pretended as a non understanding the fact of the matter.
Racism has no place in today's business world and political affairs, hence we would like to appeal on behalf of the Trainees whom are fellow compatriots, for the Senate Committee to draw the attention of Mr. President to direct both the Amnesty office and the Nigeria Embassy in Athens through Her Ministry of Foreign Affairs to immediately relocate these young men and women from a Den of Racists pretending to be a Hotel before they will come under further attacks by a racist business owner.
Be as it may, as the first batch of the programme in Greece come to conclusion in their pilots' training courses, the assessments and information available is that, the academy in question lacks necessaries aviation technology and human resources for the Nigerian Trainees to gain adequate knowledge of the aviation sector. The question here is, why has the Amnesty office refused to access and evaluate the Academy capacity now and before sending would be pilots for training at the JetStream Aviation Academy in Athens Greece?
There are other allegations concerning financial misdeed/misconduct by the JetStream Aviation Academy over payment of Trainees' allowance. In line with the Amnesty programme implementation, a bank account was opened by the Embassy upon the request of the programme coordinators with the National Bank of Greece for the purpose of Trainees allowance's payment but this account was abandoned without reason of whatsoever and JetStream Aviation Academy whose mandates was to train our compatriots becomes the one empowered for the payment of allowance whereby the cash met for payment will have to go to the UAE first before coming to Academy in Greece. This the Trainees can attest to.
As Concerned Niger Delta Citizens resident in Greece, we strongly believe that some individual at the Nigerian Embassy has full knowledge of the situation and should have acted on time but opposite was the case in having the situation checked. Failure by government agencies in charge of the programme in taking hard-line/ tougher stands against racists attacks on our citizens so far, shows the dangers our compatriots are been exposed to in a foreign land.
Honorable Chairman, if we fail to act now, the agencies and our government will put the life of million of Nigerians and others in danger as these young men and women will one day be in total control of an aircraft cock-pit in the Nigeria airspace or otherwise.
We are of the same beliefs that it's never too late right now to salvage the situation and potential dangers for the future of our people on the Amnesty programme around the globe.
At this junction, we would like to also plead with your honor as always to use your good office to discourage Modern day Slavery practices in the midst of our society because we are in no doubt with your service to our nation. We have fate in you using your outstanding office to protect and promote our citizens.
Thanking you for your time, kindly accept our esteem assurance to work with our communities for the interest of our great nation.

Renowned gospel artiste, Kefee is dead

Just like the late Dora Akunyili, the state of health of gospel singer, Kefee Obareki , popularly known as just 'Kefee', had been on the lips of well meaning Nigerians for a while now, but news filtering in this morning suggests she is not doing good or may have passed.
Sources told Pointblanknews.com that she passed in a Los Angeles Hospital last night.
The Branama crooner had been really in a critical condition and from information gathered by Pointblanknews.com, , the six months pregnant singer was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia - pregnancy induced high blood pressure.
According to close friends this, was noticed after She had embarked on a 14-hour flight to Chicago for an event but went into coma, forcing the plane to land in Los Angeles so that she could be urgently attended to.
Last week, unconfirmed sources reveal that kefee, who had gone into a coma following her collapse on a flight to Chicago for an event regained consciousness .
Her husband Don Mohmoh of Star FM radio had confirmed her deteriorating health status when he went on twitter call on everyone to pray as the doctors had revealed that Kefee's condition was very critical
This is what a medical doctor in Nigeria, Dr Adeyefa, shedding more light on Kefee's condition, said couple of weeks ago 'Kefee is in a precarious situation because of the six months pregnancy. If the foetus had been nine months, the doctors would have removed the baby and saved the mother and child.
'As it is now, not only will the baby not survive because the carrier is in coma, Kefee may also lose her life from further complications. The chances of the mother surviving is narrow, while the kid has a narrower chance. I urge Nigerians to pray for her, that's all she needs.
Some even suggest her her health trouble started after her jibe at COZA Pastor, Biodun.
According to speculations she took ill after she lambasted Pastor Biodun in an interview with Encomium brading him ' that so called Pastor'
Both fell out after the church cancelled a concert that was billed to feature Kefee. According to her, as she was about to leave for the airport, the PA to the Pastor called to cancel the show, and referred her to a publication that talked about her failed marriage to her ex, Alec Godwin.
She had said ' He said if i had seen a newspaper story concerning my ex husband Alec Godwin, i said yes, it is a scandal. And he said they dont want to have anything to do with me because of the scandal'
In 2011 Kefee was on tour in Canada. The Sapele born singer for three weeks treated fans to live music and her chereographed dances. Her official tour schedule included performances at Toronto 25th, Edmonton 3rd and Calgary 10th Dec.2011
Kefees who also toured the US saw her perform alongside Grammy Award-winning artiste, India Arie and Tyrese Gibson at the African Festival of Arts in Chicago.
Kefee was a UN peace ambassador .
Police end siege to Emir of Kano's palace
The police on Thursday ended their four-day siege to the palatial official residence of the traditional ruler of Kano Emirate.
The police had on Monday deployed armed officers and men in the palace following a series of protests by some youths who kicked against the appointment of a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, as the new Emir of Kano.
Sanusi is expected to lead the 7th day Fidau prayers for the late Emir, Ado Bayero, on Friday (today) by 12 noon.
It was gathered that the new traditional ruler will subsequently lead Muslim faithful in Kano during the Friday Jumat prayers.
The new Emir on Thursday received the leader of Tijjaniyya sect in Africa, Khalifa Sheikh Isiyaka Rabi'u, at the Government House.
Meanwhile, the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, yesterday congratulated the newly installed Emir of Kano, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, saying he was destined to be emir.
A statement singed by the National Publicity Secretary of the forum, Mohammed Ibrahim reads: 'The ACF hereby congratulates the new Emir of Kano, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi on his appointment.
'The selection of Sanusi as the new emir by the Kano emirate king makers was an act destined by Allah who alone gives leadership to whosoever He wishes.
'May Allah give the new emir the wisdom and courage to see this new position as the father of Kano people and by extension northerners and Nigerians at large. The new Emir should therefore bring his wealth of experience, competence and exposure to bear in uniting the royal family members and people of Kano for a peaceful transition and continuation of the good legacies of late Ado Bayero.
'ACF has an unflinching regard and respect for the traditional institutions as stabilizers, custodians of our core values, culture and customs, we therefore call on Sanusi to uphold the sanctity of the institution and consider his appointment as a rare opportunity to serve his people in this new capacity.
Benzema double gives France 3-0 victory

PORTO ALEGRE (Brazil): France beat 10-man Honduras 3-0 in a bruising World Cup clash on Sunday where goal-line technology awarded the first international goal in history, causing mayhem in the process.
Three minutes into the second period, the German-manufactured GoalControl system was called into action when a volley from Karim Benzema, who ended the night with two goals, came back off the post.
The ball bounced back into the area before hitting Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares.
He then tried to scoop the ball to safety, but Brazilian referee Sandro Ricci awarded the goal -- classed as an own-goal -- after consulting the instant technology.
Benzema was the star man as he opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Wilson Palacios had been sent-off for two bookable offences on Paul Pogba.
Benzema then played a major role in his side's historic second goal and the Real Madrid striker rounded off a fine afternoon with an emphatic finish 18 minutes from time.
Victory moves Didier Deschamps' men above Switzerland on goal difference in Group E after the Swiss beat Ecuador 2-1 earlier in the day with the two European sides set to meet next on Friday in Salvador.
The game had begun in bizarre circumstances as neither sides' national anthem was sung before kick-off, but normality was restored once proceedings got underway as France dominated from the off.
Blaise Matuidi had the first clear chance on 15 minutes when Mathieu Valbuena's free-kick was only partially cleared and the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder's effort was brilliantly turned onto the bar by Valladares.
Antoine Griezmann was then also denied by the crossbar for Les Bleus as he rose highest to meet Patrice Evra's cross but his header clipped the woodwork on its way over.
Benzema saw another good opportunity fly over moments later as he headed off target after a fine counter-attack involving Matuidi, Griezmann and Valbuena.
Ricci had a big call to make midway through the half when Pogba clashed with Palacios.
The Juventus midfielder lashed out at Palacios after appearing to be stamped on, but Ricci showed only yellow cards to both.
Palacios was only to last another 16 minutes in any case as he stupidly bundled Pogba over inside the area a minute before half-time and was shown his second yellow card.
Benzema stepped up to convert the resulting spot-kick to register his seventh goal in as many games for France and his first in a World Cup.
The 26-year-old was heavily involved again as France doubled their advantage within three minutes of the second-half courtesy of the goal line technology.
However, there was still confusion as replays inside the stadium first showed Benzema's initial shot hadn't gone in before confirming the ball had indeed crossed the line via the hand of Valladares.
Benzema should have added to his tally moments later when he was picked out by a fine low cross from Griezmann but could only fire straight at Valladares.
However, he wasn't to be denied 18 minutes from time when he fired expertly high past Valladares from a narrow angle to seal the three points.
9 students held in Kerala for 'anti-Modi' crossword in college magazine
Nine students were arrested in Kerala for allegedly using invectives to describe political leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
GURUVAYUR: The police on Sunday arrested nine students in Kerala's Thrissur district for allegedly using invectives to describe political leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi through a crossword puzzle in a college magazine. Other politicians defamed are Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, party MP Shashi Tharoor as well as spiritual leader Mata Amrithanandamayi.
"All the arrested students have been booked under section 153 of Indian Penal Code, which is regarding provocation with intent to cause riot," said Thrissur police commissioner P Prakash.
The arrested students are from Sree Krishna College in Guruvayur and activists of Students Federation of India, the student wing of CPM. Student editor Vibin Raj, sub-editor P K Shihab, editorial members V A Ashiq, U S Sajil, Lenin Vishnu, Sahil, Girish, Alwin K Benny, K S Sanoop and N P Sajib were arrested for using objectionable language against Modi in the journal. They were later released on bail.

Police said the remaining three accused, chief editor and college principal D Jayaprasad, staff editor Santhosh and advisory board member P G Subindas, would be arrested soon. The college magazine titled 'Name' had used Modi's nickname 'NaMo' as a crossword clue with the purported solution 'NAyeente MOn' (s.. of a b....).
However, P Sanoop, who was part of the editorial team of the magazine, told TOI that the content "was not intended to malign any person". Principal Jayaprasad said the controversial crossword was finalized without his and the staff editor's consent. "The content in question was not published with my knowledge or permission," he said.
The police commissioner seemed to corroborate this. "The complaints were lodged by ABVP and KSU. Evidence is clear against the accused students but at this point we don't have clinching evidence against the principal. More investigation is needed to ascertain whether the principal was involved."

The college magazine controversy is the second incident of its kind. Last Tuesday, Thrissur police booked five students and the editor of 'Litsokniga', the college magazine of Government Polytechnic College, Kunnamkulam, for including Modi's name along with the likes of Adolf Hitler, Osama Bin Laden and forest brigand Veerappan in a special feature on history's hall of shame
